The Development Manager is a dynamic, creative, and organized individual interested in helping RiverCenter thrive and grow. This position plays a critical role in grant management, corporate sponsorship, and individual giving for RiverCenter. The Development Manager is responsible for developing and assisting in the growth of grant funding for various programs and operations, the Corporate Sponsorship Program, and the individual giving program. They will be part of ensuring revenue goals are met for various fundraising areas. The Development Manager is a full-time position that reports directly to the Executive Director/CEO.
Although this job description enumerates the main responsibilities of the Development Manager, the position also may involve other responsibilities relevant to those specified. The job requires cooperation and collaboration with personnel in all areas of the RiverCenter operation.
Responsibilities
- Support or lead the implementation of grant management, corporate sponsorship, and individual giving with the Executive Director.
- Discover donor companies’ corporate social responsibility and/or workplace giving objectives, identify opportunities that align with RiverCenter’s mission statement, and work with colleagues to create engagement initiatives and opportunities.
- Review and provide suggestions for the Corporate Sponsorship Program
- Together with the Executive Director, actively solicit and engage past, current, and potential corporate sponsors
- Collaborate with staff directors in the development of creating and writing grant proposals, narratives, and final reports.
- Assist staff directors with the tracking of all grants in all stages.
- Conduct research on current and potential grant funders with the Executive Director
- Lead and/or support special and signature events with the Executive Director.
- Assist in the creation and execution of special development events for RiverCenter patrons
- Work closely with the Development Assistant, Director of Marketing, and Operations Directors on development-related goals.
- Other duties assigned by the Executive Director.
Non-managerial Duties
- Steward potential new members of the Capstone Society, RiverCenter’s planned-giving opportunity.
- Write, submit, and follow up on grant applications the center has regularly submitted (Georgia Council for the Arts and Columbus Cultural Arts Alliance) and search out and pursue additional grant opportunities.
- Secure and renew annual sponsor partnerships (corporate and/or individual) for the concerts and shows presented by RiverCenter for the Performing Arts.
- Write and edit the donor newsletter.
- Develop and maintain basic skills in the use of Donor Perfect, the center’s donor database program.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- Bachelor’s or higher degree – or equivalent experience in such fields as communications, business, public relations, liberal arts, etc.
- Progressively more responsible experience in an area involving strategic planning and implementation of development activities.
- An appreciation for the role of the performing arts in the well-being of individuals and society
- Outstanding skills in written & oral communications, organizational management, interpersonal relations, and leadership.
- Ability to manage a multiplicity of activities in a complex and demanding environment.
Compensation
Starting annual salary of $63,000 including all benefits offered to all full-time RiverCenter employees.
Working hours are M-F 9-5. Evening and weekend hours will be required for which working schedules will be adjusted. The working location is on site, in Columbus. Georgia with less than ten percent of the responsibilities able to be completed remotely.
Responsibilities
The primary job duty of the Marketing Director is the planning, development, and implementation of the marketing, advertising, promotional, and public relations efforts for RiverCenter. The Marketing Director oversees the marketing for RiverCenter through foundation, corporate sponsorship, underwriting, and grants and helps establish organization-wide policy with regard to marketing and promotion. The Marketing Director is supervised by the Executive Director.
Leadership & Management Duties
- Supervises other staff as assigned and makes recommendations which are given particular weight regarding the hiring, firing, advancement, promotion, and other changes of status of those supervised.
- Ensures productive and maximum utilization of the facilities of RiverCenter by planning and directing annual and seasonal marketing/advertising campaigns targeted towards selling subscriptions, group sales, and individual tickets.
- Developing and initiating publicity and public relations campaigns, marketing plans, and related materials for RiverCenter and its various programs that inform many communities about the programs sponsored by RiverCenter.
- Overseeing the preparation of printed programs
- Coordinating advertising through the preparation and placing of various media advertisements
- Serving as editor for the RiverCenter newsletter.
- Work with other RiverCenter departments to maximize marketing through the Box Office, volunteers, Trustees and educational opportunities.
- Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Executive Director.
- Contributes to the overall success of the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
A bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in Marketing or an Arts discipline is required, and a Master’s degree in similar disciplines is preferred. Five years of professional employment in marketing, the arts, and/or a related field is necessary. A thorough knowledge of telemarketing, promotions, advertising, print and electronic media, and audience development are required. An understanding of the performing arts is strongly preferred. Extensive business experience dealing with customers and/or employees on a one-on-one basis; experience with nonprofit organizations is highly desirable. Education and experience may be substituted for one another.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Requirements:
- Highly organized and motivated; self-starter.
- Management and supervisory skills, particularly in handling multiple tasks simultaneously, are required.
- Excellent oral and written Marketing skills and interpersonal skills
- Computer literacy, specifically Microsoft Office and word processing, is essential.
- Brochure development, statistical analysis, and copywriting skills are preferred.
- Extensive business experience dealing with employees and the public on a one-on-one basis.
- Able to work in a professional manner within all departments and related organizations.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills are essential.
- Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheets, Microsoft Office, and Windows-based computer applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Possess a valid Georgia or Alabama driver’s license required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Compensation
The salary of the marketing director position is competitive with similar jobs at other local not-for-profit organizations. The position includes access to all benefits offered to all full-time employees of RiverCenter. Evaluation of the marketing director’s job effectiveness and potential for salary increase will be closely tied to the director’s success in meeting or exceeding marketing goals.
