RiverCenter for the Performing Arts is located in the heart of historic Columbus, Georgia. This river town, known for its textile mills and military for many decades, is now associated with a diverse business community and tremendous cultural growth. RiverCenter is owned by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The 246,000 sq. ft. complex contains the 2,000-seat Bill Heard Theatre, the 450-seat Legacy Hall and the 220-seat Studio Theatre. The Columbus State University Schwob School of Music is located in the complex, as are six other nonprofit arts organizations. A public-private partnership entitled The Columbus Challenge raised over $100 million to construct the RiverCenter and support other projects including renovations to The Springer Opera House: the State Theatre of Georgia, and an expansion to the historic Liberty Theatre Cultural Center as well. RiverCenter was designed by Columbus architects Hecht, Burdeshaw, Johnson, Kidd and Clark, Inc. Their team included Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer and Associates as design architects, Jaffe Holden Acoustics and Theatre Projects Consultants. Beers Skanska served as general contractor under management of Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission.
